New book: “Paul McCartney: The New World Tour 1993” by Adrian Allan
Article by Shelley L. Germeaux
A new book has been published by Adrian Allan entitled Paul McCartney: The New World Tour 1993. Over the last five years, Adrian has published a total of 6 books about McCartney’s live shows and tours. At 240 pages, this is an in-depth look at the 1993 tour including many background stories, financial issues, and Paul and Linda’s beliefs and philosophies.
Following on the heels of the 1989/90 World Tour, the 1993 tour highlighted songs from his new album, Off the Ground. The tour jetted around the globe through the year, and Paul and Linda extended their animal rights and ecological concerns message to concertgoers. As staunch vegetarians, their emotional videos were stirring.
A substantial number of resources were consulted by the author for the book, such as audience recordings of concerts; official and unofficial audio and video; newspapers, magazines and tour programs. Allan also relies on 10 first-hand experiences of numerous fans, their photos and stories, including my own.
I submitted several photos and recollections about the concert I attended April 14, 1993 in Las Vegas. One of the biggest behind-the-scenes controversies that I experienced during that tour was the infamous “LIPA ticket”, which was a flop for several reasons. The LIPA ticket was a fundraiser for the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, which Paul was helping to renovate at that time. For a $1000 donation, you received two tickets to the show, soundcheck access and other VIP goodies. These tickets were designed for corporate executives, but the news was leaked to fans who started buying tickets. Several snafus with the results disappointed many fans.
Luckily, I had also purchased two other tickets from McCartney‘s Fun Club for just $28 apiece which were in the front, close to the stage.
The 1993 tour would be the last for almost a decade, and the last one with Linda, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995. She sadly passed away in April, 1998. He didn’t tour again until 2002.
The book is available on Amazon US and Amazon UK.
600-page book in the works
The author is planning another book after this, a 600-page book covering all of the tours from 1989 to 1993. He welcomes fan contributions of material, like photos and stories. He can be contacted at adrianallan12345@gmail.com.
I asked him how this book will be different from those he has published previously. He said, “More stories and photos always come in from new people after books have been published, so I have a lot more material now. Also, someone is lending me a collection of fanzines from the era to use. So the stand-alone ’89-’90 and ’93 tour books are great for general readers, but the combined 600-page book will interest fans who want a greater level of detail — more accounts and reviews.”
